Brick Walls

I just wanted to stop in and talk about walls for a minute…

There are lots of kinds.  There are the kind that are around us physically: i.e….house walls.  And then there is the invisible ones that can come and go all around us– walls we put up around ourselves, or walls that people put up for us.  Let’s talk about a few common walls:

  • Self-Doubt walls.  Sometimes there is an invisible wall around us that is doubt.  We doubt that we are good enough.  We doubt we could “handle” something.  We doubt that something will work out.

Tear down time: Tear down that wall because you need to be your biggest cheerleader! And if you stink at cheering yourself on, run your self-doubt by someone who does cheer for you…someone you trust!  Just remember to TRY something before you’re sure it won’t work.

  • Stereotype walls.  These are walls that people project on us.  Since you’re X, you must also be XX.  Since you aren’t good at Y, you probably aren’t good at Z.

Tear down time:  These walls deserve to be torn down because they just aren’t fair.  It’s okay to be frustrated when people pigeon-hole us, but it’s better to just educate people about what the truth is.  A lot of time when someone assumes something about you, it’s not for malicious reasons.  People just like to “know” and so even when they don’t “know” the truth, they try to by projecting their opinion of the situation.  Bottom line: don’t be walled in by someone else’s opinions…you know what’s right!  Be yourself and the truth about you will shine.

  • Uncreative walls.  I’m sure I’m not the only blogger who really GETS this one.  Sometimes there is a wall to our creativity.  Maybe it’s because we aren’t in a creative mood.  Maybe it’s because something is really on our mind.  Maybe it’s because we just got through a SUPER creative moment/project and so now we feel drained.

Tear down time: Just remember, uncreative walls are very flimsy and don’t last long.  So don’t be discouraged!  Do something that inspires you (looking at pinterest pics, working on a favorite project, trying something randomly new) and sooner or later those creative juices will start flowing!

  • Fear walls.  This is a lot like the self-doubt walls, except you aren’t really fearing your own failure, you’re letting something else out there intimidate you.  I feel like this is a regular one for me!  You let something really get to you.  The WORST kind of fear is the anticipation fear…when you’re anxious about something that may or may not EVEN HAPPEN.  You guys, this sounds silly even as I type it!  But it’s a real wall.  Sometimes the “scariest” thing out there is the thing that is completely fictional and imaginary.

Tear down time: My best advice here is to push down those fear walls because its SUCH a shame to waste precious real time and limit yourself based on something that isn’t even real.  Remind yourself what IS true and that fears are just fears–they aren’t actually anything tangible or real.  Yes, it’s important to be cautious and thoughtful.  But living in fear or giving yourself anxiety is just letting “projected emotions” rule over reality and the truth.

  • Ignorance walls.  Sometimes, the biggest wall can be a lack of understanding.  Miscommunication with someone, whether its a spouse, or friend, etc, can lead to issue walls.  (And those are issue walls that shouldn’t be there–because the issue is imaginary!)  Ignorance can be the worst enemy!

Tear down time:  If you are having a lot of frustrations with a person, or even a fact of life going on in the world, stop and try to learn about the situation.  Examine who said what.  Learn what is fact and what is public opinion.  If the ignorance is between you and a person, it’s perfectly fine to even bring up the fact that you feel there is a lack of understanding going on.  Try to dig deeper and tear down those walls of ignorance.  It can help you come to terms with something, and will help you in your relationships!  The ignorance always blocks the truth from being apparent.  Don’t let the ignorance muddle!

  • Negativity walls.  I know I said the other walls can be bad, but this might be the worst wall.  Negativity can be so crippling.  It can completely wall you in and smother you.

Tear down time:  It is so so so so so so so important to take care of yourself when you’re feeling negative.  Don’t blame yourself for feeling negative, it’s more important to focus on fixing it!  If you are feeling negative, turn on your very favorite song.  Pour yourself a mug of coffee or grab two pieces of your favorite chocolate and take a moment to think of 3 things that you have in life that make you really happy.  Then think of 3 things that you would love to accomplish/get in life, and what 3 baby steps you could take towards those.  Then proceed with taking those baby steps.  Sometimes, the VERY best way to stop feeling negative is to focus on someone else.  When you think you have it bad, reaching out to someone else will quickly help you realize that there are so many more people worse off, and helping them will bring you (and them!) the positivity missing.  Put a motivating quote on your fridge or mirror or steering wheel.  It will help you be more positive, and in turn, will help you shine to those around you.  It will help you shine inside out. <3

Are there any walls I’m missing?  What’s your method for tearing down these kinds of walls?  What kind of things do you like to build up in life?

DIY Housebug Repellent

Hello there!  Hopefully you read my Liebster Award post and got to know me a little bit better.  But in addition to that, I can help you know me better by sharing a not-so-secret-fact about me: I HATE BUGS.  Not really all bugs.  I think butterflies and moths are beautiful.  Worms are helpful.  Dragonflies are intriguing.  But I loathe…and I mean LOATHE… (no actually, that’s such an understatement)…I hate (can I even make myself type it?)….I HATE HATE HATE S..P…I….D….E…R….S…….UGH I HATE THEM SO MUCH.  In all honesty, I actually have arachnophobia.  It’s like a clinical fear/hatred of spiders.  And I really have it.  No, we’re not going to go into stories here.  But I have them.  And they are bad.  I have BAD spider stories that we aren’t going to talk about.

What we ARE going to talk about is this DIY house bug repellent that I recently made.  It’s made with water and one essential oil: peppermint.  Now usually, I never ever use water as the thinner for my essential oil blends.  Because, duh, oil floats.  Talk about not really mixing anything! lol  But the thing is, I am using this spray on door frames and household areas, and I can’t afford to have oil slicks on them.  If I mixed a carrier oil into this, I was going to be leaving oil all over my house.  Thus, water and peppermint became the blend.

What you’ll need:

  • Tap water
  • Peppermint essential oil (I prefer organic and I like the brand ‘Plant Therapy’)
  • A glass bottle with a spray cap

The recipe blend is pretty simple.  For every 1 ounce of water, you need 2 drops of essential oil.

  1. Step One:  Pour 8oz. of tap water into a glass bottle.  Be sure that it is a glass bottle and not a plastic one, because the essential oil will eat through a plastic bottle.  Side note–a plastic hose/nozzle is fine, but the bottle part that the oils will be resting in needs to be glass.

2. Step Two: Add 16 drops of peppermint essential oil.

3. Step Three: Tighten cap, and shake vigorously.

4.  Step Four: Spray your door frames, window sills, floor cracks, and any other areas where you think that a spider might travel. (UGH I CAN’T EVEN THINK ABOUT THAT YOU GUYS)

This spray is not intended to kill said bugs.  This is just supposed to deter them from entering your house.  Peppermint oil is an absolute  ENEMY to spiders.  They cannot stand the smell.  At all.  And so if you apply this liberally to your doors and windows, you will save yourself the scare, heart attack, and sheer terror of having any unwanted 8-leg visitors.

As a final note, to all my fellow phobics out there, I never ever spend a day without this amazing “bug beeper” plugged in.  It is an noninvasive, chemical-free way to keep your house bugless.  It sends out sound waves at a frequency that drives bugs away and I ABSOLUTELY hands-down can testify that this has stopped bugs in their tracks and kept my living space safe and livable and pleasant and non-terrorized.  I wish these were free so that the whole world would get them and plug them in and bugs would go away forever.

Okay, so that is all.  Now go out and make sprays and protect your home!  And get that bug beeper and plug it in! 🙂

Spring Wishes

Hello my lovely readers!  I’m sure that I’m not the only girl who makes mental lists of what she wants to buy.  I have had a running list of makeup I want to try ever since I started watching youtube videos by makeup gurus.  Fortunately, I have gone out and purchased some of said items.  And I’ve even written posts about them: like my ALL-TIME FAVORITE MASCARA.  But I can never quite keep up with my list, and the “to-purchase” list is always longer than the “purchased” list!  Ugh.  I can’t keep up.  But then again, if that is my only problem in life, I’m happy about that. hahaha Okay, so here is my latest Spring Wishes list:

  1. L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow: Amber rush, Endless Pearl
  2. Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadow: In the Spotlight, Fortune Teller, High Wire, ETC!!!!!
  3. A cheetah print Z palette, because see above.
  4. Maskcara IIID Foundation (not sure what colors yet…)
  5. NYX HD Finishing Powder: Banana
  6. Physician’s Formula Happy Booster Pressed Powder
  7. Victoria Secret Lip Scrub
  8. Laneige Water Sleeping Mask
  9. Burt’s Bees Radiance Serum
  10. Aria Starr Beauty Organic Argan Oil

I have a sinking feeling that what I purchase this Spring will have very little to do with what’s ACTUALLY on this list. BUT, that doesn’t change my feelings on posting this.  It’s still all the makeup I WANT, even if I don’t end up getting it. 🙂  Check back for my Summer Wishes to see what makes it back on the list. haha

And PS. if you have a suggestion of a makeup/skincare item that I need to try, let me know in the comments below!!

The Liebster Award

For the first time ever, my blog was nominated for an award!  Do you guys count the “you got 20 followers” notification as an award?  Because I guess I got that one too one time.  😀 ONLY ONE TIME. haha  Really though, I am SO excited to have been nominated by the lovely blogger Jenna at The Falcon Life for the Liebster Award.

The Liebster Award is special because it not only makes ME feel honored, but it lets me celebrate 10 blogging friends (or soon-to-be-friends) at the same time!  It works like this: someone sweet nominates me, and I get to introduce myself to all my readers again, and then I get to nominate 10 sweet bloggers who will get to introduce themselves to all of us.  Kinda catchy, right?  Here are the six official rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  2. Copy and paste the Liebster Award badge to your post.
  3. Nominate 10 new bloggers.
  4. Answer the 10 questions the person who nominated you asked you.
  5. Create 10 new questions to ask the bloggers you nominate.
  6. Notify the bloggers you have nominated by leaving them a comment on their blog.

So…without further adieu… let’s get to know me better here at jjheartblog with some fun questions:

  1. What is your favorite thing about blogging? Sharing posts!  I just love writing…hearing the sound of my own keyboard haha!!  And taking photos to accompany my posts is pretty fun too.
  2. What are your hobbies (other than your career and blogging)?  I love to do a million things: bake, cook, SHOP, scrapbook, knit, sew, decorate, sing and OMGEE I absolutely love to play the cello and the piano. LOVE TO.
  3. If you could travel anywhere in the world that you’ve never been, where would it be? I want to go to Matterhorn–Switzerland.  My husband and I have been dreaming about it for 4 years.
  4. What has been your favorite travel destination and why? My favorite destination is Rome, Italy.  I studied abroad there for a semester with my husband (when we were dating/college students) and it was the most amazing experience ever.  We lived in the heart of the city, right outside the Vatican Walls and kinda studied and definitely ate gelato and drank coffee every single day.  He asked me to marry him while we were there, so Rome will always be the most special place to me. <3  (Side note– WE LOVED PARIS TOO).
  5. If you could do one thing for all of mankind, what would it be? I would spread God’s love by being a loving person, showing an example of what love is really like–both between spouses, parent and child, friends, and just everyone around the world.
  6. If you could do anything for a day, what would that be? I would be a cellist in the London Symphony Orchestra–we would be practicing Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and then perform it live
  7. What is your fondest childhood memory? My fondest memories are writing stories. then reading them aloud to my sisters, and then listening as they read their stories aloud.  I have five sisters, and yes we totally had Little Women moments going on during those writing sessions. lol
  8. What motivates you?  My husband.  He is such a role model for me.  I want to be as caring, generous, kind, and wonderful as he is.  Every day I’m motivated to be a better person because I just try to keep up with him!
  9. If you could have 1 superpower, what would that be?  To fly.  Is that a superpower?  I’ve wanted to be able to fly since I was a little kid. haha
  10. What advice would you give other bloggers about blogging?  Blog about what you love!!  Even if something seems like a good blogging niche, if it’s not your passion then writing will feel more like a school assignment than a creative exercise.  Also, try to have at least 1 photo to accompany your post.  Pictures enhance words!

And now, allow me to introduce you to 10 bloggers who I think deserve the Liebster award:

  1. Fashionably Meek
  2. Magnificent Forest
  3. Getting Out of Bed
  4. forkwardthinkingfoodinista
  5. startwithstyle
  6. hippylip
  7. tulips&peonies
  8. beatfacefriday
  9. My Crazy Ash Life
  10. Shiny Little Pearls

And PS. I tried to make sure you were first-time nominees, but if I made a mistake, I’m sorry!  You’re just that awesome. 😀  Okay you ten, here’s what I want to know:

  1. Who is your role model?
  2. What is your favorite song?
  3. Where is your favorite place to shop?
  4. Why did you choose your blog’s name?
  5. How long have you been blogging?
  6. Who’s blog do you most often visit (besides your own)?
  7. What was your “aha!” moment when you decided you should start a blog?
  8. Where would you travel to if you could?

  10. How do you help others around you?

Thanks so much for reading this post!  I appreciate each and every one of you.  And thanks again to The Falcon Life for my nomination! I hope you all come back soon.

Empties: Winter 2016 Edition

Today is the last day of winter!  I had such a nice, long, cozy one– filled with fireside Christmas music, warm frosted cookies, many many cups of coffee, and a whole new skincare regime!  To celebrate the ending of a great season, I thought I would do a product empties post.  This is my roundup of products that I used up (“empties”) during this winter.  It takes me quite a while to go through things, because I often like to rotate through what I use.  So, the list isn’t incredibly long, but here it is!

Mary Kay Botanical Effects Moisturizer.

I used to use primarily Mary Kay products.  But they aren’t as easy to get as other brands because they don’t have that IMPULSE STOREFRONT SITUATION.  I still like their skincare line, but I have moved on to mostly Burt’s Bees Skincare (at least for the moment) and so won’t be repurchasing this.  I did like that it was from their Botanics line, and I did find it to be a very pleasant moisturizer that seeped well into the skin but was still lightweight.

Burt’s Bees Radiance Toner

As I said, I have moved to using mostly Burt’s Bees when it comes to skincare.  Which is not a bad thing at all.  This toner is amazing!  It is gentle and fresh and makes my skin feel rejuvenated.  It’s not your “average Sea Breeze minty fresh toner” but it’s pretty wonderful in it’s own way!  I repurchased this product.

Olay Daily Facials Cloths

These are the face cloths that I use every night to wash my face and remove makeup.  They are small square paper towels that have dried soap embedded in them.  All you have to do is run it under warm water and the cloth gets soapy and bubbles on your skin.  I have tried moistened towelettes similar to these (except you don’t need to add water to them) and I have found them pretty ineffective in comparison.  However, these cloths work AMAZINGLY.  On the package, it says that they exfoliate, but I definitely don’t feel like they are rough or scratch my skin.  It also says they hydrate and tone, which they probably do, but I still like to use an additional toner and moisturizer.  They leave my face feeling clean and they take off all my makeup, even eye makeup!  (Bonus: they never sting my eyes!)  Always a repurchase.

Mary Kay Liquid Eyeliner

To be honest, this is one of my top 3 most FAVORITE makeup products ever.  Ever.  Ever.  Ever. I wore it the night I met my now-husband then-crush.  I wore it on our Wedding Day.  I wore it literally (HONESTLY) every single day for 6 years.  There is no comparison to this product.  And it is discontinued.  And this was my last bottle.  Words cannot express…

Maybelline Define-A-Line Eye Liner

Okay, you all KNOW how  I feel about this eyeliner.  Enough said.  Oh, but this color was like “802 soft black” I believe, and that’s not my preferred color.  Still used it up though.  😀  It’s that good.  A TOTAL repurchase, just not in this color.

L’Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black Mascara

AND THEN THERE IS THIS PRODUCT IN MY LIFE.  And you know how I feel about it.  100% amazing.  And duh, a repurchase.  Try a re-re-re-repurchase.

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In

Last but not least, there is this superb hair product that I literally can’t recommend enough!  It’s really a 10.  Haha, get it?  Okay moving on.  You need this product in your life.   For obvious reasons.  I don’t care what kind of hair type you are…(okay, actually, I do care–it’s actually really interesting and important) but seriously, EVERYONE needs this product.  I repurchased this.

And that’s a wrap!  Let me know in the comments below what your most loved/used product was this winter!  I’d love to add it to my spring collection.

Thanks for reading!

Today’s Manicure

So, I really want to grow my nails out.  But by “grow them out” what I really mean is not having them be so short.  I don’t honestly like long nails, they feel like talons. haha And I actually prefer the look of shorter nails.  Maybe it’s because I have long fingers, and so long nails make me look like my hands are 4 feet long. 😀  Regardless, I like my nails short, but not as short as they are right now!  Polishing my nails always seems to fix that for me– it’s like I get a sneak preview of what my nails COULD look like if I would just take care of them a little bit. lol  It encourages me to take the steps to let them grow and look good.  So here is today’s nail look:

I start with one coat of clear base coat.  Read about my base coat opinions.  They are strong.

Then I apply two coats of polish.

Then I finish off with a top coat.  Again, strong feelings about this one.

And that’s it!  Polish Color of the Day: OPI’s Strawberry Margarita.  Fun fact:  One time I accidentally smashed a bottle of this on a driveway at a beach rental.  It totally stained the cement.  #rentalhouselife

What nail polish are you wearing today?

Miracle Leave-In

Product review– on my favoritest hair brand ever!  Today I’m reviewing the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In product.  Because, <3.

It’s thickened white spray with a delicious floral smell that literally turns your hair into HAIR PERFECTION.  It is typically used on wet hair, and dare I say it’s more effective that way? Hair follicles that have just been washed in warm water are “opened”and so they absorb products better.  But if need be, you can use this on dry hair.

It promises to do 10 things:

  1. Repair dry, damaged hair
  2. Add shine
  3. Detangle
  4. Control frizz
  5. Seal and protect hair color
  6. Prevent split ends
  7. Stop hair breakage
  8. Create Silkiness
  9. Enhance natural body
  10. Flat Iron spray and thermal protectant

And it does.  It literally does EVERYTHING it promises.  (Side note:  my hair is not dyed, so I can’t vouch for #5.  And I don’t use heat products on my hair, so I can’t vouch for #10.  But if it promises to do 8 things and totally delivers, I have a hunch that it can do those other two things!)

There are four variations of this–the “Lite,” “Blonde,” Plus Keratin,” and “Silk.”

*INSERT MINI-REVIEW ON THE KERATIN PLUS* I have tried the Keratin Plus before, and found it equally as pleasing.  The smell was a little “deeper” and mellow.  However, if your hair is not in need of a Keratin treatment, then don’t use it, because it is actually possible to over-Keratinize your hair.  Not trying to scare you.  Lol  But let’s just say, IT CAN HAPPEN.  Over-Keratinizing your hair can way it down and smother it, so only give your hair the amount it needs.  I used to think “the more Keratin the better.”  I have since mended my ways.  But all-in-all, I loved the Keratin Plus too and would recommend it!

Have you tried any the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In, or any of its variations?

My Current Primers

I’m not one of those people who are ADDICTED to primers.  I think they are helpful, and my skin feels better when they are on (or is it that I feel better about my skin when they are on…) but I still wouldn’t classify my attraction to them as an addiction.  We will save that term for the more die-hard necessities.  Like MASCARA.  And EYELINER.  I digress.

My current face primer is the Maybelline Master Prime by Face Studio– and I’m using the Blur + Illuminate version.   It’s the primer I put over my toner and moisturizer, but under any foundation, concealer, highlighter, powder, bronzer, etc.   My primary reason (hehe, primary…get it?) for wearing primer is that I want a protective layer between my foundation and skin, so that the foundation clings to a sheer mask on my skin, and not my actual pores themselves.  This product does that for me, and so I have enjoyed using it.  Does it preserve your makeup for a full 24 hours?  No, but that’s not a priority for me when it comes to primers.

The FEEL:  Some primers are “silicone-y” while others are “creamy” and I find this one to be on the creamer side.  It does not leave your face tacky, and absorbs into the skin the way a moisturizer would.  On a frivolous side note, it has an ever so slight rose smell, which I love.  And the product itself is tinted pink.  Um…CUTE!  I haven’t noticed it change my skin color though, it just “illuminates” it a bit by making my skin look more fresh and blowy.

My current eye primer is the Mary Kay Eye Primer.  Its scentless, dries quickly, and holds eye color on pretty well.  I have to say that I like this, but like the Maybelline, it’s not a MIRACLE product.  Depending on my eye makeup, I have still had crease lines at the end of the day, even when wearing this primer.  However, I do feel like it holds the colors on my lid better than if I wasn’t wearing it at all.  I also wouldn’t say that it makes my colors POP the way that some primers do.  It’s basically just coats my eyes to protect my pores from absorbing the oils and pigments of eye color…which is all I need it for anyways.

The FEEL: It has a thicker consistency than the Maybelline face primer, but I don’t mine because I put it on such a small part of my face that I don’t need it to spread thin.   And It’s white, not pink.  🙁  But it dries absolutely clear.

All in all, would I repurchase both primers?  Yes, I would.  But would I be willing to try different primers?  Absolutely!  So leave me a comment below if you have a favorite to recommend.
